Image & Word - Artistic and literary references in the collection

POI and infrastructure

The exhibition ‘Image & Word’ traces the diverse and open field of tension between image and word using works from the collection.

Egon Schiele

The ‘Image & Word’ exhibition shows how closely art and language have been linked since the modern era. Artists and writers sought new forms of expression and broke with traditional conventions. Egon Schiele wrote poems inspired by French poetry, Alfred Kubin illustrated works by Poe and Hesse, and Marcel Duchamp humorously scrutinised the art world with wordplay. The Dadaists and Surrealists also experimented intensively with language and images in order to explore the subconscious.

From the 19th century to the present day, the creative interplay of image and word has continued in art. The exhibition invites you to discover this exciting development - playful, poetic, disturbing and humorous.

Exhibition period: From 25 January 2025 to 8 June 2025.
