On 15th November 1315, a Habsburg band of knights led by Duke Leopold was forced to retreat by people from the area between the present-day villages of Oberägeri and Sattel. They suffered considerable losses in the process. The Morgarten celebration, which is held every year on 15th November, commemorates this important moment.
The monument, inaugurated in 1908, is unique in the Swiss monument landscape. Its location and design, size and shape cannot be directly compared with any other memorial in Switzerland.
